An Invitation to Read and Discuss This Band of Sisterhood
During Advent All Saints and Saint Paul’s Vergennes will offer a zoom-based conversation on Sunday evenings 5-6 pm facilitated by Ann Boyd based on the book, This Band of Sisterhood by Westina Matthews. The book shares a series of conversations among the first African American Women diocesan bishops in the Episcopal Church on topics of faith during challenging times of political conflict, deep divisions, and limitations during the COVID pandemic.
Indiana Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows (consecrated in 2017), Newark Bishop Carlye J. Hughes (2018), Colorado Bishop Kimberly Lucas (2019), Vermont's own Bishop Shannon MacVean-Brown (2019), and Western Tennessee Bishop Phoebe A. Roaf (2019) offer honest, vulnerable wisdom from their own lives that speaks to this time in American life. The book is dedicated to Bishop Suffragan Barbara Harris, the first woman and first African American woman elected a bishop in The Episcopal Church (and the Anglican Communion). And let’s not forget Bishop Gayle Harris, who succeeded her and who, for 13 years, was all we had. She and Barbara Harris (who passed away in March 2020) are the foremothers that started this band of sisterhood.
The Rev. Ann Boyd will facilitate four conversations at 5pm on Zoom on Sundays during Advent (Nov. 30-Dec. 21, 2025).
